Motion of the Sacroiliac Joint Proceedings

Wood J Conference on Current Topics in Chiropractic: Reviews of the Literature May 19-20 1984; F2: 1-16

The literature published after 1900 concerning movements of the sacroiliac joints is reviewed. Some studies, particularly those based on anatomy, have suggested that rotation of the sacrum relative to the ilia occurs about a transverse axis defined by the position of two arcuate iliac ridges and two corresponding sacral grooves. One study on living subjects supports this theory of sacroiliac joint mobility. Other studies tend to indicate that motion of the sacrum relative to the ilia occurs about a variable axis and that translation, as well as rotation, is a common movement at the sacroiliac joint.
