The treatment of headaches through the resolution of cervical a common therapeutic approach. When these fixations tend to recur, the chiropractor will often seek a co-existing problem as being the reason for this, either biomechanical, postural or organic in nature. It was decided to investigate impacted wisdom teeth as being one possible causative factor. A retrospective study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between impacted wisdom teeth, headache and persistent cervical fixations. Subjects were selected from the records of the clinic of the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic, Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. The study group of 100 patients with one or more impacted wisdom teeth was selected by viewing each patient’s antero-posterior and lateral cervical X-rays. A control group of 100 subjects without impacted wisdom teeth was chosen in a similar manner. In both groups, the case histories were examined to determine if headache was a presenting symptom and the treatment records studied for the presence of persistent cervical fixations from occiput/C1 to C3/C4 inclusive. After statistical analysis of the data using the chi-squared test, a significant relationship was demonstrated between impacted wisdom teeth and headaches, headaches and persistent cervical fixations and impacted wisdom teeth and persistent cervical fixations. Improvements to this study are discussed in this paper, especially possible sources of error.
