A Structural Approach to Craniomandibular Disorders

Sarkin JM Dig Chiro Econ May/Jun 1991; 33: 43-46

The TMJ is an extremely complex, finely balanced and biomechanically precise articulation. A comprehensive knowledge of the normal anatomy and function of this structure is invaluable in evaluating and correcting problems with it. Presented is a methodology for acquiring a patient history based on symptomatology and some cranial corrections for craniomandibular dysfunction. The cranial corrections focus on: (1) sphenobasilar extension and flexion, (2) sphenobasilar assist #1 – occipital approach, (3) sphenobasilar assist #2 – occipital-maxillofrontal approach, (4) intraoral sphenobasilar extension correction, (5) intraoral sphenobasilar flexion correction, (6) sphenobasilar torsion correction (temporal internal and external correction). A clinical decision must be made whether to address internal temporal side or the external temporal side. This decision is based on how the sphenobasilar synchondrosis is cycling.
