An Effect of Sacro Occipital Technique on Blood Pressure

Unger J, Sweat S, Flanagan S, Chudkowski S Proceeding of the International Conference on Spinal Manipulation 1993 Oct : 87

There are a few controlled studies of the effect of spinal manipulation for the treatment of hypertension. Although several chiropractic techniques have advocated the use of these adjustments either as a primary treatment or as part of a hypertensive management plan, little published evidence exists supporting an effect of a chiropractic adjustment on blood pressure. The purpose of this study was to determine if a single, specific chiropractic adjustment would lower blood pressure. The data from the study demonstrated that a chiropractic intervention, a single Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT) adjustment consisting of fingertip contact on the occipitomastoid sutures and the application of gentle lateral traction bilaterally for approximately three minutes, can bring about a significant reduction of blood pressure in a hypertensive group of subjects. Not only was the reduction in systolic blood pressure statistically significant, more important was the clinical significance of this effect.
